Never heard of AVB?  You should check them out!  To be honest I had not heard of them until I came across their site by chance.  It is difficult to judge a company by their website and their products by the pictures, so I reserved   judgment until I received samples of their controllers.  I must say I was pleasantly surprised with what I received.

I have used other USB devices but this is only my second USB joystick (not including the MS Precision Pro I returned for the Force-Feedback Pro).  If your system is USB capable and you run Windows 98 I strongly suggest taking advantage of it.   It offers no-hassle set-up, on the fly switching of devices (without restarting your system), and low CPU usage.  Gameport devices do not always offer these advantages.

The Top Shot is packed with features that are important to today's gamers.   The throttle, rudder and 8 way hat switch are essentials for flight sims (8 programmable buttons don't hurt either).  I also found the trim controls very helpful in flight sims.  The throttle handle is nicely placed on the left-center of the base and 2 buttons are on either side of it.  The front of the base has a self-centering rudder control that is tricky to reach without unhanding the throttle.

The stick itself is very comfortably molded for your right hand (although I am left handed I have always used joysticks with my right hand so I can throttle with my left).   The stick has  4 buttons and the 8 way hat switch well placed for easy use.   The base is somewhat small and light but secures well to a smooth surface with 4 suction cups.  Alternatively, you can mount it on a stand similar to my joystick T stand.

I only ran into two very minor issues during its use and both are discussed and a work-around is described in the AVB FAQ.  With Microsoft Flight Sim 98 the joystick showed up as "/3" in the options panel.  Although it does not properly identify the Top Shot you should select the "/3" for configuration and setup.   In Freespace the options panel would crash when trying to detect the joystick (effects most joysticks, not just the Top Shot).  Refer to the AVB FAQ for specific details.

Features -
  • X/Y axis trim controls
  • 8 programmable buttons
  • 8 way hat switch
  • throttle control
  • rudder control (self centering)
  • Plug and Play USB connection
System Requirements -
 USB port and Windows 98
Price -
The Top Shot is a great value at $59 considering you get  the full version of Descent Freespace: The Great War bundled with this feature packed stick.

Performance
I tried the Top Shot with all my favorites:  Microsoft FlightSim 98, Combat Sim, Need For Speed III, Motocross Madness and the included Descent Freespace.   It performed well in each.  This controller is very precise; drift is not a factor.  I found the trim controls especially helpful in the flight sims where I was traveling great distances and did not want to hold the nose down for extended periods.

The 8 buttons allowed me to use most of the games features without having to bother with the keyboard.  The rudder control is a spring loaded wheel on the base of the joystick.  I found it a bit difficult to use it effectively and accurately because of its small size and the centering tension.  Overall, I found it comfortable to use even after hours of use.

Setup -
I finally saw an effective demonstration of "Plug and Play" with the Top Shot.   Plug the Top Shot into a free USB port while the system is running and it is instantly detected.  You are asked to insert your Windows 98 CD so it can install the drivers.  The you run make sure it is selected as a game controller, calibrate it and your ready to play.  It simply doesn't get any easier.

Software -

The Top Shot drivers are already within your reach on the Windows 98 CD (listed as HID Game controller: 4 axis 8 button joystick with POV hat).  The Top Shot also comes bundled with the full version of Descent Freespace (called Conflict Freespace on the box due to foreign copyright and trademark issues) on 2 CD's.

Documentation -
The 6 page manual walks you through setup, troubleshooting and describes the features of the controller.

Overall Rating -
I recommend the AVB USB Top Shot Joystick.  Its USB capabilities, features and affordability make it a desirable controller to own for flight sim and general gaming enthusiasts.
